![]() ![]() To avoid fragmentation of a compilation, you need to make sure that every track has identical values for certain tags. Keep compilation, album name, year and album artist tags identical This way, your compilations are still grouped under 'Various' yet when you perform a track search by artist, you should get both the tracks from the artists' albums and also those that appear on compilations. Ideally, you should populate the track artist with the artist who performed the track, and the album artist with 'Various' or some variation (see below). This gives you the most portability amongst different music players. However, if you have populated the track artist field with differing artist names for each track, the album artist field should in turn be used to group the tracks under the 'Various' title. The minimum you should do is populate the track artist field. Secondly, the data may be available but the ripper itself may not insert album artist tags. This data is not always reliable or consistent, and so only the track artist may be populated and this may vary per track. The first is that CD rippers often look up data online, on one of the free CD databases. Undesirable compilation 'fragmentation' often occurs when ripping CDs for two reasons. Without an album artist, there is no overall grouping artist. Here's the problem: if only a track artist is specified, and that track artist differs for each track in a compilation (let's say because you wanted to record who sang/wrote each track) then without an album artist the compilation will be fragmented. Here's how these abstract names map to the actual tag names required: The second is, de facto, called the album artist field. Avoid artist fragmentationĮach digital music file you have has two main fields in which you can record the artist. So, the unfortunate thing is that your music player may not support compilation tags. Indeed, the MP3 tag 'TCMP' became de facto by its use in iTunes. The slight issue here is that neither of these tags are officially specified by the various specification bodies. If not, it's best not to have the tag at all. Specify '1' for the tag, when the track is in a compilation. The compilation tag is named as follows, and should be set for every track: This gives a 'hint' to your music player to make sure to group the tracks together. If a collection of tracks is a compilation, it's only fair to tell your music player. The best place to start is to be explicit. Here are five considerations you should bare in mind when organising various artist compilations. You might want to search for and play a compilation, so you want the compilations organized together, rather than going through different artists, adding track by track. Conversely, sometimes listening to a compilation is a good idea, and some compilations are works of art in their own right. You don't want to be shown individual tracks from compilations the artist may be featured on. For instance, say you are interesting in playing an entire album by one particular artist. This means they often require some form of separation while navigating. Unlike albums, various artist compilations do not make up one contiguous body of work by an artist. To get the most out of compilations, making them more navigable in your music library, you need to treat them differently to other albums. Various artists compilations are compilation albums that feature tracks by more than one artist. It takes up to 10 seconds to display the artwork once the track is playing.Five ways to organize your various artist compilations With each Mp3 showing the correct Album Art. The various folder on my USB stick now looks and plays well in the X3. I must be missing a trick or an app to do all this for me. U2, With or Without You, should be Album= 'Joshua Tree' NOT 'Now Hits 87', and then embeds the artwork from the original album 'Joshua Tree' into the MP3. I still can't find a program which automatically retags my mp3's with the original artist album name i.e. ![]() Looks like there used to be a an option to ignore Compilation Albums, but its been removed. I used 'MusicBrainz Picard' to try and auto correct the tags, but it tried to be too clever and could see that my mp3 came from a compilation album. My issue stems from the fact that the mp3s I'm using come from Compilation Albums not the original Artist Albums. I tried a program called Album Art Downloader which looks great, BUT it only works if each of your mix of mp3's are in separate folders, and it doesn't seem to embed the artwork into the mp3. Laborious task and it only searches Amazon for artwork, but not too bad with only 40 mp3's to tag. I tried a number of solutions but ended up using Mp3tag to manual set the artwork for each mp3 in my Various folder. ![]()
